Gratitude Is Better And Different Than Appreciation

Gratitude

I read an article recently in INC. Magazine written by Benjamin Hardy PHD. The article spelled out the difference between gratitude and appreciation, what being grateful is actually about along with a concept called “The Gap and the Gain.” More on “Gap and Gain” in a minute.

To be successful we must experience complete gratitude every day for the inevitable success of our future in everything we do and then act the part right then and there. In today’s world there are many distractions and things designed almost intentionally to confuse us and redirect our attention. Coronavirus, Impeachment, Trump, China. Sanders, Weather and Income Inequality all come to mind. While these may be real issues the question comes down to how much time you are willing to spend focusing on these to the exclusion of all else.

Many people I talk with feel overwhelmed by what they deal with daily. What would change if they became grateful for what they deal with? Being grateful concerns your past, present and future and you are free to change any of these as you see fit… Most importantly the past where many of us get hung up. I’ve come to believe that all of my past failures and frustrations were actually laying the foundations for the understanding I have created the new level of living I now enjoy. Things do not have meaning… we assign any and all meaning to things.

Dan Sullivan, the founder of Strategic Coach, teaches a concept called “the Gap and the Gain” and says most people live in “The Gap”… I agree. The Gap is what’s missing as opposed to what’s actually present. You could stop at the store and buy a co-worker a soda on a hot day and when you give it to them they could say “This isn’t the brand I prefer” and that is their Gap. They failed to notice the effort you expended to get them the gift and didn’t understand they are better off now than before and chose to focus on what’s wrong and what’s missing. Many people spend their lives living in “The Gap.” Dan Sullivan teaches people to live in the gain. Measure where you were before and not against any ideal scenario.

Living in the gain shows you progress and what you focus on tends to expand. Doubt that? Spend the next 48 hours focusing on the Coronavirus! When most people look back on their life they remember gaps more than gains. They remember what wasn’t perfect instead of what was really good. When you spend time in the Gap things don’t change and this is how you proactively develop a shitty mindset. One of my favorite quotes is “I am an old man and have had a great many troubles but most of them never happened.” Reshape your memories of the past and become the person who attaches the memories of your choice to any event. Don’t be the person who says I am this way because of (divorce, bankruptcy, bullying, DUI, unfair promotion of someone else, difficult childhood or anything else). Stop focusing on circumstances and start focusing on what you’re capable of. Your ability is where the magic lives. Read, be happy, smile, interact and do the things that make your world a better place!

My name is Steven Clauson. I coach people who want help getting where they want to be. The people I coach are typically already taking action, getting results and ask what’s next and what actions to take to make an even greater impact. They aren’t afraid to ask for help. How can I help you? What actions are you taking? Those who have a plan and implement that plan lead the pack. Planning, preparing to win and taking appropriate action means you hear the word “YES” more than ever. Only if you one of the few willing to take action, do what’s required and play full out are likely to hear the word yes more often. People hearing the word “YES” are winners on the field playing because they play full out and dominate. For these people results matter. Tired of results less than you know you can produce? The Impact Of Telling Your Story

Story

There are 2 way’s to gain significance in the world. You either play a bigger game or have a bigger problem than anyone else. What you think about, talk about and do something about is what comes about. This is how a success or a mess is created.

I listened to a “story” recently until I couldn’t take it any longer. For 25+ minutes someone I’ve known for over 20 years went on about all the bad things that have happened to him since the economic crash of 2008. The same crash everyone went through starting in 2008. He was sincere. He believed every word he told me. People make up things that empower them and things that disempower them. I asked him which camp he was reporting to every morning.

Imagine telling the same story every day for 12 years. Would it remain the same story or would you enhance it? Now tell the truth. What story are you telling yourself? Does it serve you? What actions have you taken to change the story? Problems are nothing more than a sign it’s time to grow and contribute. Growth and good things are tied to action and stagnation and bad things are tied to inaction. The question isn’t “what will you do”… The question is “who will you be?” Change comes when the cost of not doing something is greater than the cost of actually doing what needs to be done. The fear you have is nothing more than a conversation in your head about what could go wrong.

Rising Tides Don’t Discriminate!

rising tide

The San Francisco Chronicle had a story in the business section on January 21 about wages rising faster at the bottom than at the top by the widest margin in at least 20 years. The article is written by Ernie Tedeschi. Some of this wage increase is as a result of the increase in minimum wage in many places nationally. What about the rest of the increase?

The majority of the increase in wages is due to the undeniable forces of supply and demand. Today there are far fewer workers chasing jobs in an abundant job market. The two morals of the story are “A rising tide lifts all boats” and the fact that no one ever got a job from a poor person. Like it or not this economy is working for everyone who chooses to participate.

Some owners and most managers will simply try to hire more people, pay them as close to minimum wage as possible and think problem solved! The funny thing about opportunities is they’re often dressed as problems. Most never even see them for what they are. Play attention!

Many portions of the economy are on fire and if you aren’t experiencing that I invite you to demand to know why. Spoiler alert… The reason you aren’t participating in this growth is something your doing or more likely something you aren’t doing! Wages are up, employment is up, many restaurants are full and Costco is a madhouse.

When was the last time you had your business mystery shopped, got the results and took action based on what you learned? I have what is now a former client mystery shopped after suspecting and having proof provided of employee theft and then deciding the theft hadn’t reached the point where they wanted to take action to stop it. I wish I was kidding! They said it was so hard to find good staff they didn’t dare upset the apple cart.

To answer what is happening in the staffing world today requires systems, training and retaining the best people possible. Investing in staff training can be scary. Some tell me they don’t want to invest in staff training and staff development for fear they will leave. The bigger fear is not investing in staff training and having them stay. Your call!
