I read an article recently in INC. Magazine written by Benjamin Hardy PHD. The article spelled out the difference between gratitude and appreciation, what being grateful is actually about along with a concept called “The Gap and the Gain.” More on “Gap and Gain” in a minute.
To be successful we must experience complete gratitude every day for the inevitable success of our future in everything we do and then act the part right then and there. In today’s world there are many distractions and things designed almost intentionally to confuse us and redirect our attention. Coronavirus, Impeachment, Trump, China. Sanders, Weather and Income Inequality all come to mind. While these may be real issues the question comes down to how much time you are willing to spend focusing on these to the exclusion of all else.
Many people I talk with feel overwhelmed by what they deal with daily. What would change if they became grateful for what they deal with? Being grateful concerns your past, present and future and you are free to change any of these as you see fit… Most importantly the past where many of us get hung up. I’ve come to believe that all of my past failures and frustrations were actually laying the foundations for the understanding I have created the new level of living I now enjoy. Things do not have meaning… we assign any and all meaning to things.
Dan Sullivan, the founder of Strategic Coach, teaches a concept called “the Gap and the Gain” and says most people live in “The Gap”… I agree. The Gap is what’s missing as opposed to what’s actually present. You could stop at the store and buy a co-worker a soda on a hot day and when you give it to them they could say “This isn’t the brand I prefer” and that is their Gap. They failed to notice the effort you expended to get them the gift and didn’t understand they are better off now than before and chose to focus on what’s wrong and what’s missing. Many people spend their lives living in “The Gap.” Dan Sullivan teaches people to live in the gain. Measure where you were before and not against any ideal scenario.
Living in the gain shows you progress and what you focus on tends to expand. Doubt that? Spend the next 48 hours focusing on the Coronavirus! When most people look back on their life they remember gaps more than gains. They remember what wasn’t perfect instead of what was really good. When you spend time in the Gap things don’t change and this is how you proactively develop a shitty mindset. One of my favorite quotes is “I am an old man and have had a great many troubles but most of them never happened.” Reshape your memories of the past and become the person who attaches the memories of your choice to any event. Don’t be the person who says I am this way because of (divorce, bankruptcy, bullying, DUI, unfair promotion of someone else, difficult childhood or anything else). Stop focusing on circumstances and start focusing on what you’re capable of. Your ability is where the magic lives. Read, be happy, smile, interact and do the things that make your world a better place!
