Ever Wonder Why Tim Tebow Is A Winner… This May Be It

It’s not about getting it perfect and it’s all about getting it going.  Often times what you’ve decided to do will fail.  Often times it will fail in more of a dramatic manner than anyone predicted.  When it does fail you will likely have someone nearby telling you it was going to fail and to give up before you embarrass yourself again.

Some people are rubbed the wrong way because Tebow is open and honest and talks frequently about his faith and his habit of displaying unswerving optimism.  In a recent press interview detailed in the publication InspireMore,Tebow was typically upbeat and optimistic and he shared this piece of wisdom which has gone viral:

“You’re always going to have critics and naysayers and people that are going to tell you that you won’t, that you can’t, that you shouldn’t. Most of those people are the people that didn’t, that wouldn’t, that couldn’t.

Criticism is a fact of life and we’re not wired to handle it well. Psychology professor Roy Baumeister says our brains need to experience five positive events to make up for the psychological effect of just one negative event.

Who Else Wants Discount Lasik?

I received an e-mail this morning offering a Groupon for Lasik eye surgery. I wondered who was willing to trust a surgeon with a Laser working on their eyes at a discount? What bad thing could happen?

This Groupon tells me there are people who consider price to be the ultimate reality to the exception of everything else. Consumers with this mindset are to be avoided at all costs. The price will never be low enough and this is the first group to complain about quality. How about discount dental work? Discount heart surgery? Discount tires for the car your family rides in? Discount coaching? Where does the madness end?

I met a 25 year old “business coach” recently fresh out of college. Very nice person indeed. The sort of academic background you would hope someone would have after 6 years in college. He had a BS in Business from a good school his parents saved their money to send him to. He was even more blessed (he thought) that he didn’t have to work to get through school and eventually graduate. He knew really well what the books said and could repeat that verbatim. A few gentle questions showed what was below the surface.

He has never had a job of any sort. Nothing even part time. He spent 6 years getting a 4 year degree. He had a great web site loaded with theory and no experience. He has never failed at anything. He has never really succeeded at anything. He was good at taking handouts like an education while risking nothing. There was just no there there! Life has never kicked him in the man sack even once so the reality is he won’t know what to do when failure hits him… Failure will hit him and hit him hard! He was however inexpensive!

If you have a higher demand and actually want to accomplish something work with a pro who has been kicked, one who knows failure and success, one who has a lot more success than failure and one who cannot repeat what the books say but know how to accomplish a result. Life should be an investment.

Right Answer = Smart… Right Question = Brilliant!

The ability to answer a question makes you smart.  We were taught from grade school that having the correct to answer a question got you an “A” in class.  That grade would result in the promotion to whatever the next level was.  Good job.

Few people excel at asking the right question.  Right answers get you to middle management… if that’s your goal quit reading.   Asking and answering the right question will take you to the Executive Board… Possibly even make you in charge of that board.  Want an example?

I am currently overweight.  I admit it.  The question “how can I get in shape and lose some weight” gets to the surface problem.  This is actually the symptom and after reviewing this I look at the treadmill I have in my gym, the free weights and the workout clothes I own because if I own the right equipment I will lose the weight.  This is asking a tactical question and does nothing more than misdiagnose the problem.

Having a gym, workout clothes, equipment and everything else is useless.  Asking the question “Why am I deciding with my food and exercise choices to be overweight?”  This is the right question.  Asking and answering the right question in any situation moves mountains.  

When you want to ask the right question it pays to move away from the tactical approach and move toward the strategic approach.  This is where results occur.

What If Bad Marketing Meant Death?

Robert Leibowitz lives in New Jersey and was faced with a life threatening problem.  He had to to have a kidney transplant, the waiting list is a decade long, he is 60 years old and in declining health.  He needed a solution and didn’t have time to spare.

Robert had shirts printed that said “In Need Of A Kidney, O Positive Blood Type” and his Phone number.  He then took off on a family vacation to a place where lots of happy people visit Disney World while wearing that shirt.  A couple of weeks later Richie Sully from Fort Wayne, Indiana called him and was found to be an exact match.  The surgery happened a few weeks ago on Robert says he’s “walking on clouds.”  Robert is a retired direct response advertiser and turned to what he knew produced results.

I remember John Lennon being interviewed saying sometimes he sat down with Paul and would literally write a swimming pool or a new house.  What they wrote and recorded would literally pay sufficient royalties to pay for a new house or pool for each member of the band.  A song like “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” or “Help” is nothing much more than a direct response letter with some music attached.  The idea comes across and people respond.  Who isn’t responding to what you’re saying and what would they want to hear to change all that?

Ever Demand A Guarantee From Yourself?

Many people buy things as a result of a guarantee of getting their money back if the product fails them. Perfect.  What’s the recourse when they fail the product they purchase?

Want to know why you don’t have more? Ask yourself questions like;

  • What time did I get up?
  • What did I put in my brain?

Action Is the Foundation To Success…

With any problem, no matter how complex or difficult, you will find a good portion of the solution comes down to action. Just take at least some action and the problem gets smaller every time.  The fact is that the difference between where you are now and where you want to be comes down to a series of imperfect action steps.

Failure Isn’t A Problem… Failure is How You Succeed

Who decided failure was a problem? When something works the first time you might be baffled and have no earthly clue why it worked.  When something fails for the third time you tend to get damned interested and figure it out.  The world of success is littered with failures.

Michael Jordan was a failure… Until he wasn’t anymore. Bill Gates was a failure… Until he wasn’t anymore.  Donald Trump was a failure… Until he wasn’t anymore.  EVERYONE is a failure until they aren’t anymore.  Fail more often and sooner if you demand to get to the top.  Failure is the road there.

Time Doesn’t Heal All Wounds!

I ask potential clients what their goal is behind hiring me and I hear things like make more money, have more time off, put systems in place and get the freedom they intended to have when they started. What I seldom hear is they want someone to get the things done they’ve been meaning to do and never seem to get to. This is a story of time NOT healing ANYTHING!

A little more than 6 months ago I met with a small chain of sports bars. They were losing money, barely making payroll, were behind on state and federal taxes and had key staff members leaving almost every week.   About the only good thing in their world was a Manager they considered to be a key person hadn’t quit (Once I met her I knew why… She was virtually unemployable in my opinion).  It would have been a blessing for her to quit and they weren’t (still aren’t) that lucky.

Their Facebook page didn’t work, the website wasn’t up to date, event’s not current, events not listed, absentee owner, non-existent general manager and staff people intent on going through the motions and little else. This was designed as a family business with family investment in time and money.  They needed serious help.  I am here to report that six months later they still do!  They changed the website without apparent improvement.  Their Facebook link still doesn’t work and since this is a series of Sports Bars the social side of things matter… Nada!  No idea about taxes getting paid and I remember the owner telling me he figured out how he can delay paying taxes and keep the doors open “Until things pick up!”

This is an on point case where saving money and not hiring someone to kick some ass and get some things done was the most expensive decision they could have made and dramatically more expensive than hiring me. Customers forgotten find someplace new and this is especially true in the hospitality business.  Each chair in a place like this should equate to $12,000 per year in revenue in California and the bigger the city the higher that number.  They aren’t close.  Once a day is done you can never recapture that revenue. Never forget Money Doesn’t Sleep!

I Feel So Much Better Now That I’ve Given Up Hope…

These actual words and sentiment was overheard recently in a Safeway. This boils down what a lot of business owners, especially business owners in California feel.  They’ve worked hard, worked long hours, taken sometimes insane risk, tried everything they know and haven’t yet succeeded at a level they’ve determined is acceptable.  These people are trying hard.

I define Trying as a noisy way of not accomplishing something.  What do you call someone trying to quit smoking?  In most cases a smoker.  What do you call someone trying to lose weight?  In most cases overweight.  The list goes on.  Psychosis is defined as doing the same thing and expecting a different result.  Seldom effective… always frustrating.  What wonderful thing happens when you finally give up hope?

I started working with a new client in late December 2016 (150 days ago) and when we both agreed to work together (Her response wasn’t yes, it was Hell Yes!) her big question was how she could get the most out of our time together.  My response was to get dumber.  The best thinking she had took her to the place she was and no further.  She needed new thinking and needed to apply new ideas and concepts without prejudice.  She promised.

I heard from her last week. Her monthly income has increased 400% since December (That’s a 400% increase in 150 days) and her weeks are getting shorter.  She is getting dumber still and has set a goal of a 1000% increase by December 2017. She gave up false hope in exchange for an actionable plan to go from Point A to Point B as fast as reasonable. I understood what she wanted and the route to get there.  At the end of the day she gave up being right to be wealthy and it was the right choice for her.  When we meet she believes I am the smartest person in the room and her bank balance reflects that reality.

I Don’t Know As A Sign Of Wisdom

One of my favorite quotes comes from Colin Powell when he said “Don’t just do something, stand there!” This goes against our traditional point of view and is spot on advice in most situations.

Humans are hard wired to provide solutions to problems. We often feel we must provide a solution NOW… that’s simply not the case.  Often we visit a doctor and tell them about an issue we’re having and they want additional testing or to confer with another doctor before deciding what the path forward is.  None of us are better than this!

Complex questions are seldom repaired with quick off the cuff answers. When I meet with someone for the first time they are either doing well and want to do better or they have a laundry list of problems which need to be solved or they are done.  I meet for 2 hours and determine what result they are looking for.  I drill down and determine what has already been done, how it was done and what result was actually produced.  Like a doctor I must have a complete history to determine the path forward.  I will likely have an answer that has worked in the past and even though it worked for someone else it may or may not be right for that person at that moment. Life is not a “one size fits most” adventure.

I am willing to say “I Don’t Know” and this is a sign of the wisdom I’ve developed in the last 26 years of coaching. During that time I’ve also been running my own business (currently 4 of my own) and time spent pondering is typically time well spent.  Great solutions don’t come quick and quick solutions are seldom good.
