Don’t Let Up, Keep Moving Forward and Focus On One Thing

something great

In the current climate this is a wonderful piece of advice. Here’s the reality… This is actually 3 pieces of advice from Mark Cuban, Barbara Corcoran and Chris Schembra. Taken on their own merits each has its own level of magic and power. Taken together they could be the trifecta you are looking for.

Don’t let up means just that… All gas, No brakes! I’ve talked to dozens of business owners and entrepreneurs who were soundly bit in the ass during COVID-19 outbreak for the simple reason that they weren’t prepared. By their own admission they’d become lazy and complacent, Being on top of this was like being prepared for a pop quiz in high school… If you were studying every day the pop quiz was easy however if you were lazy you had a problem. If you were working every day you might have had a much easier time of this. Don’t let up!

Keep moving forward because while you don’t have to get it perfect you do have to get it going. You’ll be far better off moving forward than waiting to get everything perfect before you act. A finance expert might refer to this as “Ready, Fire, Aim!” Nobody makes perfect decisions the first time every time and the power comes down to making new decisions and moving ahead. Until you try you won’t know what to change.

Focus on one thing comes down to trying to chase two rabbits at the same time. Every time you try to do this the result is the same… Both rabbits go free. Focus on what you want and the rest takes care of itself. When I work with clients I only work with one of a particular profession at a time. They deserve that respect and it causes me to focus my time and attention in one direction. In 29 years I’ve discovered that when I focus my time and effort on a specific thing I am able to monetize that expertise.

My name is Steven Clauson.  I coach people who want help getting where they want to be.  The people I coach are typically already taking action, getting results and ask what’s next and what actions to take to make an even greater impact.  They aren’t afraid to ask for help.  How can I help you?  What actions are you taking?  Those who have a plan and implement that plan lead the pack.  Planning, preparing to win and taking appropriate action means you hear the word “YES” more than ever. Only if you one of the few willing to take action, do what’s required and play full out and you likely to hear the word yes more often.  People hearing the word “YES” are winners on the field playing because they play full out and dominate.  For these people results matter.  Tired of results less than you know you can produce?  Call me at 916-230-0176 or visit www.assaultmarketing.com

Skateboarders Defy L.A. Mayor And Take Back Skate Park

5-27-20-skate-2

No matter if you agree or disagree with their actions you almost have to admire their determination! After over a month of waiting to get back to skateboarding, bike riding and roller blading a large group of motivated citizens in Venice Beach decided Memorial Day was the best time to make a dramatic move. A little background… In mid-April in an attempt to enforce “social distancing” the mayor of LA ordered a popular skate park filled with sand. The Mayor said that once the orders were lifted the skate park would be reopened and the sand removed. The adults didn’t organize the sand removal… The skaters did!

On the morning of May 26, 2020 the skaters showed up with brooms, pick axes, shovels, buckets and even cardboard to remove all of the sand from the park. Numerous videos were uploaded to the internet showing dozens of people and a makeshift assembly line in place to scoop up the sand and remove it from the park.

By mid-afternoon on Memorial Day the park was completely cleared of the sand and the entire park had been swept clean. By late afternoon they were posting videos of boarders performing tricks in the bowls well into the evening. In many of the videos posted you can see police officers who didn’t stop the sand removal as the day went along. There is an LAPD Substation about 200 yards away.

There are several great takeaways here.

  • Teamwork can move mountains when you aren’t concerned about who gets the credit.
  • Taking decisive action has magic attached to it.
  • For most people the “want” is greater than the “need.”
  • Something is only work if you define it as such.
  • The value of the goal must be more important than the work it took to get there.

Finally… A Participation Trophy Worth Having

trophy

Monumental stress doesn’t create character… It simply reveals it. Some entrepreneurs made the choice to participate in the economy we have. They will be far ahead when things return to what they decide will be their normal. Keep in mind the money didn’t suddenly go away… its just being help onto a little tighter than normal. I want to thank those I am personally associated with who have earned a trophy; Ross, Glenn, Jessica, Brian, Michael, Nick, Jeff, Tom, Duane, Mike, Joe, Sharon, Marie, Darla and Valerie. You are actively working the economy as it exists and each of you will be rewarded nicely I’m convinced.

If you’ve ever been on a plane when the oxygen masks dropped (I have!) you know first-hand the value of thinking of yourself first. They tell you in the instructions to put your mask on before helping anyone else including a child. If you’re gasping for air you are of no use to your child. Once breathing normally you have the chance to calmly help others. When this entire thing started in March I made certain my family was going to be fine. I called all 3 children and told them to get gas and a weeks-worth of food. I did the same thing for Sharon and myself. I stand by that.

All of this forced me to control what I can control. I’ve been calm and collected during the majority of this process. I have had moments of frustration but they were few and brief. I have washed my hands more frequently than normal and that’s about the extent. I have worked more than usual and had the chance to invest more in my skillset. I have had people ask if I could do something and in every case I delivered. Sometimes I got help and in other times I delivered that help. Very rewarding from my side of the desk. I’ve spent my time looking to make a greater impact and help whomever I could. I’ve said before to those I am honored to serve “Thank You” for asking me to do things I didn’t know how to do at the time. When you did this you expanded my comfort zone and made me more valuable to everyone else!

The Biggest Problem People Have… Revealed!

Problems

From all indications the biggest problem most people have it they don’t think they should have problems. From my side of the desk, the higher someone’s income level the less pervasive this problem seems to be. Problems are a fact of life. The ability to solve problems is typically more mindset than anything else. By the way…The only group of people without any problems reside in cemeteries!

A problem solving mindset increases with the importance, time sensitivity and potential cost of the problem. Power shutoffs are in the news lately. If you live in an impacted area and rely on electrically powered medical equipment the reality may be not solving the problem could lead to death. The solution to the problem is now critical. The solution is more important than anything and you’ll find a solution!

I work with people who demand solutions to problems. This encompasses everything from business to personal issues… they impact one another. Unsolved business problems tend to go home and enturbulate the personal portion of your life. Unsolved personal issues tend to go into the work place and end up being revenue killers. When you focus on personal issues at work something is bound to fall between the cracks.

What problem do you currently have you think you shouldn’t? What have you done to solve it? What else have you done to solve it? How’s that working for you? What’s the cost of keeping the problem? What’s the cost of solving the problem? Measure those costs in actual dollars. Now write down on paper the long term cost of solving the problem and the long term cost of keeping the problem? Weigh these two totals against one another and make a decision. Need help? Give me a call.

Gratitude Is Better And Different Than Appreciation

Gratitude

I read an article recently in INC. Magazine written by Benjamin Hardy PHD. The article spelled out the difference between gratitude and appreciation, what being grateful is actually about along with a concept called “The Gap and the Gain.” More on “Gap and Gain” in a minute.

To be successful we must experience complete gratitude every day for the inevitable success of our future in everything we do and then act the part right then and there. In today’s world there are many distractions and things designed almost intentionally to confuse us and redirect our attention. Coronavirus, Impeachment, Trump, China. Sanders, Weather and Income Inequality all come to mind. While these may be real issues the question comes down to how much time you are willing to spend focusing on these to the exclusion of all else.

Many people I talk with feel overwhelmed by what they deal with daily. What would change if they became grateful for what they deal with? Being grateful concerns your past, present and future and you are free to change any of these as you see fit… Most importantly the past where many of us get hung up. I’ve come to believe that all of my past failures and frustrations were actually laying the foundations for the understanding I have created the new level of living I now enjoy. Things do not have meaning… we assign any and all meaning to things.

Dan Sullivan, the founder of Strategic Coach, teaches a concept called “the Gap and the Gain” and says most people live in “The Gap”… I agree. The Gap is what’s missing as opposed to what’s actually present. You could stop at the store and buy a co-worker a soda on a hot day and when you give it to them they could say “This isn’t the brand I prefer” and that is their Gap. They failed to notice the effort you expended to get them the gift and didn’t understand they are better off now than before and chose to focus on what’s wrong and what’s missing. Many people spend their lives living in “The Gap.” Dan Sullivan teaches people to live in the gain. Measure where you were before and not against any ideal scenario.

Living in the gain shows you progress and what you focus on tends to expand. Doubt that? Spend the next 48 hours focusing on the Coronavirus! When most people look back on their life they remember gaps more than gains. They remember what wasn’t perfect instead of what was really good. When you spend time in the Gap things don’t change and this is how you proactively develop a shitty mindset. One of my favorite quotes is “I am an old man and have had a great many troubles but most of them never happened.” Reshape your memories of the past and become the person who attaches the memories of your choice to any event. Don’t be the person who says I am this way because of (divorce, bankruptcy, bullying, DUI, unfair promotion of someone else, difficult childhood or anything else). Stop focusing on circumstances and start focusing on what you’re capable of. Your ability is where the magic lives. Read, be happy, smile, interact and do the things that make your world a better place!

My name is Steven Clauson. I coach people who want help getting where they want to be. The people I coach are typically already taking action, getting results and ask what’s next and what actions to take to make an even greater impact. They aren’t afraid to ask for help. The Impact Of Telling Your Story

Story

There are 2 way’s to gain significance in the world. You either play a bigger game or have a bigger problem than anyone else. What you think about, talk about and do something about is what comes about. This is how a success or a mess is created.

I listened to a “story” recently until I couldn’t take it any longer. For 25+ minutes someone I’ve known for over 20 years went on about all the bad things that have happened to him since the economic crash of 2008. The same crash everyone went through starting in 2008. He was sincere. He believed every word he told me. People make up things that empower them and things that disempower them. I asked him which camp he was reporting to every morning.

Imagine telling the same story every day for 12 years. Would it remain the same story or would you enhance it? Now tell the truth. What story are you telling yourself? Does it serve you? What actions have you taken to change the story? Problems are nothing more than a sign it’s time to grow and contribute. Growth and good things are tied to action and stagnation and bad things are tied to inaction. The question isn’t “what will you do”… The question is “who will you be?” Change comes when the cost of not doing something is greater than the cost of actually doing what needs to be done. The fear you have is nothing more than a conversation in your head about what could go wrong.

Rising Tides Don’t Discriminate!

rising tide

The San Francisco Chronicle had a story in the business section on January 21 about wages rising faster at the bottom than at the top by the widest margin in at least 20 years. The article is written by Ernie Tedeschi. Some of this wage increase is as a result of the increase in minimum wage in many places nationally. What about the rest of the increase?

The majority of the increase in wages is due to the undeniable forces of supply and demand. Today there are far fewer workers chasing jobs in an abundant job market. The two morals of the story are “A rising tide lifts all boats” and the fact that no one ever got a job from a poor person. Like it or not this economy is working for everyone who chooses to participate.

Some owners and most managers will simply try to hire more people, pay them as close to minimum wage as possible and think problem solved! The funny thing about opportunities is they’re often dressed as problems. Most never even see them for what they are. Play attention!

Many portions of the economy are on fire and if you aren’t experiencing that I invite you to demand to know why. Spoiler alert… The reason you aren’t participating in this growth is something your doing or more likely something you aren’t doing! Wages are up, employment is up, many restaurants are full and Costco is a madhouse.

When was the last time you had your business mystery shopped, got the results and took action based on what you learned? I have what is now a former client mystery shopped after suspecting and having proof provided of employee theft and then deciding the theft hadn’t reached the point where they wanted to take action to stop it. I wish I was kidding! They said it was so hard to find good staff they didn’t dare upset the apple cart.

To answer what is happening in the staffing world today requires systems, training and retaining the best people possible. Investing in staff training can be scary. Some tell me they don’t want to invest in staff training and staff development for fear they will leave. The bigger fear is not investing in staff training and having them stay. Your call!

Ever Wonder Why Tim Tebow Is A Winner… This May Be It

It’s not about getting it perfect and it’s all about getting it going.  Often times what you’ve decided to do will fail.  Often times it will fail in more of a dramatic manner than anyone predicted.  When it does fail you will likely have someone nearby telling you it was going to fail and to give up before you embarrass yourself again.

Some people are rubbed the wrong way because Tebow is open and honest and talks frequently about his faith and his habit of displaying unswerving optimism.  In a recent press interview detailed in the publication InspireMore,Tebow was typically upbeat and optimistic and he shared this piece of wisdom which has gone viral:

“You’re always going to have critics and naysayers and people that are going to tell you that you won’t, that you can’t, that you shouldn’t. Most of those people are the people that didn’t, that wouldn’t, that couldn’t.

Criticism is a fact of life and we’re not wired to handle it well. Psychology professor Roy Baumeister says our brains need to experience five positive events to make up for the psychological effect of just one negative event.

Who Else Wants Discount Lasik?

Blind Person with Cane Icon stick figure

I received an e-mail this morning offering a Groupon for Lasik eye surgery. I wondered who was willing to trust a surgeon with a Laser working on their eyes at a discount? What bad thing could happen?

This Groupon tells me there are people who consider price to be the ultimate reality to the exception of everything else. Consumers with this mindset are to be avoided at all costs. The price will never be low enough and this is the first group to complain about quality. How about discount dental work? Discount heart surgery? Discount tires for the car your family rides in? Discount coaching? Where does the madness end?

I met a 25 year old “business coach” recently fresh out of college. Very nice person indeed. The sort of academic background you would hope someone would have after 6 years in college. He had a BS in Business from a good school his parents saved their money to send him to. He was even more blessed (he thought) that he didn’t have to work to get through school and eventually graduate. He knew really well what the books said and could repeat that verbatim. A few gentle questions showed what was below the surface.

He has never had a job of any sort. Nothing even part time. He spent 6 years getting a 4 year degree. He had a great web site loaded with theory and no experience. He has never failed at anything. He has never really succeeded at anything. He was good at taking handouts like an education while risking nothing. There was just no there there! Life has never kicked him in the man sack even once so the reality is he won’t know what to do when failure hits him… Failure will hit him and hit him hard! He was however inexpensive!

If you have a higher demand and actually want to accomplish something work with a pro who has been kicked, one who knows failure and success, one who has a lot more success than failure and one who cannot repeat what the books say but know how to accomplish a result. Life should be an investment.

Right Answer = Smart… Right Question = Brilliant!

The ability to answer a question makes you smart.  We were taught from grade school that having the correct to answer a question got you an “A” in class.  That grade would result in the promotion to whatever the next level was.  Good job.

Few people excel at asking the right question.  Right answers get you to middle management… if that’s your goal quit reading.   Asking and answering the right question will take you to the Executive Board… Possibly even make you in charge of that board.  Want an example?

I am currently overweight.  I admit it.  The question “how can I get in shape and lose some weight” gets to the surface problem.  This is actually the symptom and after reviewing this I look at the treadmill I have in my gym, the free weights and the workout clothes I own because if I own the right equipment I will lose the weight.  This is asking a tactical question and does nothing more than misdiagnose the problem.

Having a gym, workout clothes, equipment and everything else is useless.  Asking the question “Why am I deciding with my food and exercise choices to be overweight?”  This is the right question.  Asking and answering the right question in any situation moves mountains.

When you want to ask the right question it pays to move away from the tactical approach and move toward the strategic approach.  This is where results occur.

My name is Steven Clauson.  I coach people to get where they want to be.  The best part is the people I coach are typically already taking action, getting results and still think about what actions to take to make an even greater impact and aren’t afraid of asking for help.  What help do you need?  What actions have you taken?  I know the one’s with a plan and implementing their plan lead the pack.  Planning, preparing to win and taking the appropriate action means you hear the word “YES” more than ever. Are you one of the few willing to take action, do what’s required and play full out to hear the word yes more often? People accustomed to the word “YES” are winners on the field playing full out and dominating. For these people results matter. Tired of results less than you know you can produce?  Call me at 916-230-0176 or visit www.assaultmarketing.com
